Who hasn't enjoyed talent shows like The Great British Bake Off, The X Factor, or Strictly Come Dancing? They captivate us with their entertainment value and have popularised baking, singing, and dancing. Now, Ready Set StartUP has debuted on Amazon Prime, and I am confident that it will do the same for entrepreneurship.

Inspired by my experience as a judge on Ready Set StartUP, I want to delve into the essence of being a successful entrepreneur and explore the key traits that define entrepreneurial individuals.

Being an entrepreneur is not solely about having a groundbreaking idea or the right education. It's more than simply starting a business. In fact, there are individuals who have started businesses but lacked the true entrepreneurial spirit – and have consequently gone through their fair share of struggles. Entrepreneurship is about mindset, habits, and practices that foster creativity, resilience, and a growth-oriented approach. These qualities can be innate or developed by anyone. Developing entrepreneurial skills can make any career more fulfilling and successful, and having entrepreneurial individuals within a business contributes to its growth and success.

The top Five Key Characteristics of genuine entrepreneurs

• Seizing and Creating Opportunities: Entrepreneurs are self-starters who don't wait for opportunities to come their way; they actively seek and create them.
• Embracing Failure: Not every endeavour goes according to plan, and not every opportunity yields success. Seasoned entrepreneurs understand that failure is a natural part of the game and view it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Embracing failure requires resilience, stress management, and self-motivation.
• Problem-Solving: Entrepreneurs possess the ability to think creatively, plan strategically, and set goals effectively. Problem-solving is both a skill and a mindset, as there is always a way forward.
• People Skills: Successful entrepreneurs excel in interpersonal relationships. They avoid time-wasters, build strong networks, delegate effectively, and seek to avoid conflicts. Appreciating others and expressing gratitude are central to their approach.
• Result-Oriented: Entrepreneurs are driven by tangible results. They set clear goals and tirelessly work towards achieving them. They understand that success is earned through focused effort, regardless of external factors such as location, timing, or luck.

These characteristics transcend specific situations and can be applied to various contexts. Based on these traits, individuals can become business owners, co-founders, or invaluable team members. These were the very aspects I focused on while assessing the entrepreneurial acumen of the Ready Set StartUP contestants and evaluating their ability to successfully execute their business projects.
